Themes of the NovelStation Eleven is novel that is outlined by many themes. I will be describing the two I felt were the most important.

A Dystopian Society:
Like many novels Station Eleven depicts a dystopian society. It revolves around a natural disaster that destroys civilization and for the survivors life is brutal and often short. However, in many ways this novel is different from others in this genre. Other dystopian novels focus on the journey of a single protagonist but with Station Eleven the perspectives of many different characters are explored. Another major difference is that Station Eleven explores life in detail during, before and after the pandemic that destroys society. Other dystopian novels that I have read only feature the post-apocalyptic world. The most apparent difference is that Station Eleven is about what makes life meaningful and how people can't just survive with bare will, they need something to live for -- art. Other dystopian books are often centered around rebellion and revolt against an evil government. So even though Station Eleven is a novel in a overly popular genre it makes for a very different, captivating read.
An artists representation of a dystopian society.
